Marginal Effects

I'm sure I'm not the only one to ever think about this, so I'll put this question out there. Have any of you ever thought about the marginal effect of a stat increase? It's kind of weird because we all try to get pokemon with stats as high as possible, but how much is enough or too much?

I suppose if one really wanted to be anal about it, they could do some calculus with the damage calculation function. But there are several unknowns and certain assumptions you would have to make in advance and I personally don't really want to wrap my head around what I would need to do to max D in terms of...well, you get where I'm going with this.

So what do you guys think about this? Does it really matter that a metagross' atk is 400 versus 405 (I think that's its max if I remember it right)? Or that my miltank's hp is 384 versus 400-something?

Sunny Park

I tried to do the Sunny Park challenge on PBR for old time sake. There are some cheating bastards in there. I used all level 1 pokemon and every single one of the CPU pokemon were 5. Don't tell me I need to EV train a set of 6 to level 5. That's F'ing ridiculous. Has anyone fought through there? I should make my gym level < 5 ...... syke

Darkrai

I'm assuming all of you have heard about or seen the Darkrai silhouette on pokemon.com. I checked a little while ago and that animation is already gone. I wonder how long it will be before Darkrai is released as the next event.

Challenge Team Discussion

How do we want to handle challenge teams, i.e. the teams trainers will use to challenge for gym badges? Do we want a trainer to have one fixed team with which he challenges each gym, or allow a pool they can choose from, or let them challenge with any team they want each time? If a set number of pokemon is decided, do we allow switching hold items, movesets, etc... Do we want to have a set battle format, or let each gym leader define his own rule set?

Please don't be shy about responses here!

Checking In

Hey All,
I know I've been kind of quiet the last couple of weeks and its mainly due to working on counter-strategies for some of the stuff I've been seeing on wifi lately. What I wonder though is when we'll begin letting people challenge us for badge (or possibily gym) status? I have all of the ice types that I'm going to use in my gym, but I've been doing a lot of work to come up with the six pokemon that I'll primarily be using for all wifi challenges. Also, if anyone has any ideas on the type of badges we'll be handing out, I'd like to hear them. I was thinking (especially since our group isn't that large) that we could each choose our own (not very expensive) pins to hand out.

By the way, if anyone wants to go up against my gym for badge status, just email me.

Battling Tonight?

Hey, anyone out there down for some battling/trading tonight? I have a Onyx I'm trying to evolve, plus there are a few TM's I'm looking for. Also, I have a new Weavile I'm looking to try out. Wi-fi is probably easiest, though if people are down we could always meet up somewhere.

Oh SNAP

For those who don't keep an eye on the BulbaNews RSS in the upper right, Pokemon Snap is just 5 days away. Time to get some Wii Points.

Just keep it away from Mankey

Apparently, someone going by "ecpl-matt" won the bid for one of these tonight...

Pokemon Snap Updated For Virtual Console

Send pics of your Pokemon to friends.

November 30, 2007 - A new twist for Virtual Console owners will arrive in early December as Pokemon Snap arrives on the Japanese version of the service.

The classic 1999 N64 title, in which players take pictures of their Pokemon, will hit the service with a brand new feature for the Wii: the ability to send pics to friends. You'll be able to post your pics as messages to the Wii Message Board and send them along with comments to friends in your friend list.

Owners of the Japanese Wii can look forward to a slightly modified Virtual Console game on 12/4 for the standard N64 price of 1,000 Wii Points.

New Trainer

Hello everyone!

I responded to the "New Faces" post from October, but now I realize it's been swallowed into the bowels of history. Here's a short recap: thanks to Zero for the invitation; I'm new to Pokemon (working my way through Victory Road); and, I'm interested in some friendly games until I get a real team built.

As you can see from the gym list, I've been added to the Poison Gym. I don't have an official team yet, but I do have one in the planning stage. In the meantime, my Friend Code is posted in my profile if anyone feels like a battle!

Pearl - Only One -Hall of Origin

I noticed this guy at the bottom of every page in the type-based pokedex, so I looked him up to see if it was a glitch.

H to the ATE

We haven't had a new topic in a few days, so I figured I'd start one up myself: Which Pokemon do you absolutely despise and think was a terrible idea? I'll go ahead and start by saying Shieldon and Bastiodon. At first I thought they looked awesome "Hey great! Two pokemon with big shields on them!" Then I tried using one. "Well it doesn't do much damage but it least doesn't take a lot. What's this? Someone's using a Fighting move on it? NOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!"

Curse you, Rock/Steel, for being such a crappy typing.

Pokemon TFG Interview

... can be found on IGN.

Apparently, next series "Groundbreakers" is scheduled for this winter.

Get Together

So from this past weekend, it sounds people are itching to get together and try out some of the teams we've been working. Is there any day this week most people would be available to meet up, and if so where would we want to do it. Alternatively, should we try to set up a regular meeting day outside of the Sidebar's DS night?

Last Minute Get Together

It seems there's some interest in getting together tomorrow for some in-person battles. Who's interested, and what time/who's place works best?

Adventures in Pokemon

After the general thrashing my ice team took on wifi last night, I decided I needed a cloyster badly. So after some iv breeding to get a good impish shellder, I then bred it with a kabuto that I bred to have rapid spin. After four shellder eggs, an impish shellder hatched, but not just any impish shellder...

It was a shiny impish shellder with the following ivs:
HP: 20/21
ATK: 2/3
DEF: 14/15
SP. ATK: 31
SP. DEF: (30/31)
SPD: 18/19

Now I wish the ATK stat was the one that had the +31, but I am just amazed at my good fortune.

When is DS Night?

Is this still going down? ... How about a heads up!

"So just one more reminder that DS Night will begin monthly starting on Wednesday (first date TBA) in November at the Sidebar Taven (www.sidebartavern.com) hosted by Entertainment System (www.myspace.com/entertainmentsystem). Matt and I will be bringing a TV with Battle Revolution so that we can have level adjusting for the Pokemon tourney. I'll be picking up a prize or two (don't expect anything very extravagant). I'll have a full rule list for the tournament soon but for now the two things in stone are no-legendaries and double battles only. See you in the funny pages!" - Chris

EV Training Hot Spots

With Pokerus and a Macho Brace, after giving you guys 10 vitamins, you will only need to battle 19 2EV Pokemon to max out one stat.
For an easy time getting EVs check out these hot spots I found:

[Attack Spot | Super Rod]
Gyarados - 2 Attack Point(s)
1) Fly to the Resort Area head North towards Rt 228.
2) Head West at the first road sign where the two trainers are.
3) Use the Super Rod to fish in the sea. You will only catch Gyarados.

[Speed Spot | Surf-Bike]
Poliwhirl - 2 Speed Point(s)
Poliwag - 1 Speed Point
1) Fly to the Resort Area head North towards Rt 228.
2) Pass the two trainers and cross the first patch of grass
3) Pass the road sign. You should be in a sandstorm now.
4) Ride your bike up the first ramp/sand slide you see.
5) Head West down the steps and Surf in the Pond.

[Special Attack Spot | Surf]
Golduck - 2 Sp. Attack Point(s)
1) Fly to the Resort Area and head south
2) Head East at the first intersection.
3) Surf in the pond with the tree standing in the middle.

[Defense Spot | Boat Ride]
Graveler - 2 Defense Point(s)
1)Fly to Canalave City
2)Head to the West side of the harbor and talk to the sailor
3)Sail to Iron Island.
4)Head up the steps, and enter the cave. Make the 1st left.
5)Most of the Pokemon here should be Graveler w/ very few Zubat.

[Special Defense Spot | Surf]
Tentacruel - 2 Sp. Defense Point(s)
1)Fly to Sunyshore City
2)Head to the North beach towards Victory Raod
3)Surf heading North and move away from the beach.
4)As you head out you should mostly see Tentacruel and very few Pelipper (2 Defense).

This should get you started. If anyone wishes to add to this try to maintain the format.

Personal Favorite

So just out of curiousity, what is everyone's favorite pokemon? Not most powerful (though that can certainly factor in) and not most popular, but which one do you generally just like the most? Mine has always been Hypno, since he was the powerhouse of my team back in the days of R/B. He's since been outperformed by many others, but I'll always have those memories of repeatedly whomping the E4 with my Hypno.

Opinions and ideas wanted

Alright, here's is my dilemma. I have a Camerupt with great IV's, a good nature, and the right ability trained up for my gym team, but I'm afraid I may have messed it up. It's current moveset is Roar, Amnesia, Lava Plume, and Earth Power, but I'm thinking I should go back and breed Ancient Power onto it or redo it's EV's and give it Stone Cut so it will have a Rock attack. In all my calculations, I've become rather afraid of it coming up against a Flying type pokemon that is resistant to Fire attacks, since it won't be able to squat to it no matter how good its Sp. ATK stat is. Any suggestions about which course I should take or any other creative ideas?

Mmmmmm, dericious

So after only 4 hours or so of breeding, I got a Baltoy with the following IV's:

HP:28
ATK:26-27
DEF:31
Sp. ATK: 26-27
Sp. DEF :30-31
SPD: 30-31

Needless to say, such good luck makes me VERY happy.

PBR Mystery Gifts

Did everyone pink-up their Magmortar yet? I forgot everyday this week so far.

Pokémon.com today revealed the Mystery Gift code to obtain Magmortar
in Pokémon Battle Revolution. The Electivire code was revealed last
month and is still available. Both Pokémon, once obtained, can be
downloaded to copies of Pokémon Diamond and Pearl.

Magmortar: B416-X4HT-VTWF
Electivire: BA16-X4SH-E2AT

To download the Pokémon:

1. Enter your Profile.
2. Click on Self-Introduction.
3. Enter the code (one at a time) exactly as it appears and click confirm.
4. Go back to the main menu. The Pokémon will be in the Mystery Gift section of the Shop.

Once the code has been entered, the player will also receive an
upgraded Pokétopia Silver Battle Pass which will allow him or her to create a custom pass.

New Faces

I want to welcome the new members to the Blog. Nate and Marion (as well as the pending Rich) are friends of mine who are down with the 'mon.

We've been putting our Friend Codes in our profiles to facilitate wi-fi battles, so just click our names (the full member list is at the bottom of the page) to add people, and feel free to add your own to your profiles.

If you want to join a Gym, just let us know. It can be anything from just picking a Gym to show love for your favorite type, to training a full Gym team to become it's leader.

Finally, feel free to post any questions, comics, news, etc... That's what the Blog is here for.

Tick Tock

Just out of curiousity, how many hours would you all say you put in Pokemon per day/week? I've been trying to get some pokemon bred and trained for my gym, but to be honest I haven't had a lot of time lately between work, moving, and other games. It used to be I could spend a few hours a night trying to be the best there ever was, but now......sigh.

Tower Tychoon...ARGH!!

Ok, I have fought this jerk twice already and lost each time. First time was due to having nothing to hurt Milotic (last Pokemon vs. last Pokemon on my team) and the second time was due to be put to sleep while fighting Dragonair, I believe.

ANy tips? Currently, I'm using Metagross, an untrained Empoleon, and Scizor.

Official E.C.P.L. Rules

Links to Rule Discussion Threads can be found at the bottom of this Post

This is meant to be a constantly updating list of rules for the East Coast Pokemon League. It will be linked from the Gym List, so that it is always easily accessible. This is the first draft based off of our previous conversations. Keep in mind this list applies only to official battles, we welcome and encourage battles using a wide variety of rule sets outside of official matches. Please respond with any suggestions or concerns.

General Rules
Official League battles will adhere to the following rules:
- Lvl. 50 All: Of course, all battles will be level adjusted. To ensure that stat rounding is the same whether using Pokemon Diamond/Pearl wi-fi, or Pokemon Battle Revolution, Lvl. 50 All will be used regardless of other level adjustment options available.
- Double Battles: We feel double battles offer much more complexity and fun than single battles. It also lets Trainers explore moves, abilities and team combinations that may be of little or no use in single battles.
- No Legendary Pokemon: We want to encourage the use of a wide variety of Pokemon, not just the handful with an obvious stat advantage. As a general rule, ask yourself “Could I hatch this Pokemon from an egg using a Ditto?” If the answer is “Yes.”, then the Pokemon passes this restriction.
- No Event Pokemon: Event Pokemon are those recieved as a bonus from another game (such as Surfing Pikachu from Battle Revolution) or from a sponsored download event (such as Toys R’ Us Manaphy). While most Event Pokemon are already covered by the “No Legendary Pokemon” clause, we want to make sure that Trainers who did not want to purchase extraneous games, or were not able to make it to a download events are not at a disadvantage.
- No Repeat Items/Pokemon: Again, to encourage the use of a wide variety of Pokemon, teams may not have more than one of the same Pokemon. Also, it is not allowed for more than one Pokemon on a team to hold the same item.

Gyms
Members: Much like the game, Gyms are for people who would like to specialize in a specific type of Pokemon. Joining a Gym is also your first step towards becoming a Gym Leader. You can leave a Gym and join another Gym, but you cannot be in more than one Gym at the same time. You can be both a Gym Member, and a Challenger (see below), but you cannot challenge yourself for a badge if you are a Gym Leader. Gym Pokemon must currently be of the same type as the Gym you are in, regardless of previous evolution stages. Dual types are allowed, so long as one of the types matches the Gym.
*Exceptions to this rule are the Bug and Dragon Gyms. In acknowledgment of their disadvantages, they are allowed to use any Pokemon from the Bug and Dragon Egg Groups, respectively.
Leaders: Once you have trained six Gym Pokemon, you are eligible to be a Gym Leader. If no leader currently exist for your Gym, you are automatically the Gym Leader. If your Gym already has a Leader, you may challenge them for Leadership rights.
As Leader, you will accept challenges from Challengers, keep track of your wins and losses (maybe even a battle summary), and ensure that Challengers are adhering to the Official Rules. Gym Leaders can choose any six of their Gym Pokemon each time they are challenged. Unlike Challengers, they need not use the same team each battle.

Challengers
For those of you that wanna be the very best, like no one ever was. Challengers will create a Trainer Card, which will keep track of your battle team, badges, and other information. Once registered, you may begin challgenging Gym Leaders for badges. You must use the same team (Pokemon, Moves, Held Items) for all of your Gym challenges. If you decide to change your team, you will need to register the new team and start from scratch.

Elite Four and Champion
Challengers that collect eight Gym Badges are eligible to become part of the Elite Four, or even the Champion (This of course, requires us to have at least eight Gym Leaders). Challengers only need eight Badges, but they are of course welcome and encouraged to try for more. E.C.P.L. will aim to have Gyms for all 15 types.
If there are four or fewer Challengers that meet the Badge requirement, they are automatically members of the Elite Four. Once there are more than four Challengers that meet this requirement, we will have a tournament to determine the Champion, and which remaining challengers are in the Elite Four.

...yes, this is intended to be much more difficult than the in-game leagues.

Hey, I'm Breakin' This First....

Fellow gamers, the code for Magmortar was just released and although the code is posted on serebii.net, I just wanted to point out that the game to get the code can be found on www.pokemon-games.com.

How are the gyms coming?

So I'll admit I'm still sort of far off from completing all the guys for my gym, but I was thinking it would be nice to have some sort of deadline where we all meet up and battle our gym league pokemon. Obviously not too soon, but maybe by the end of the year. Maybe even make it a little party/event thing. Thoughts anyone?

Penny Arcade and Pokemon TFG

http://www.penny-arcade.com/comic/2007/10/17

A Little Conjecture

As you all are into pokemon as much if not more than I am, I'm sure you've had moments where you were frustrated that certain moves are not available as TMs or egg moves. So my question for the day is what moves would you like to see become available as TMs or egg moves in future versions of pokemon??? Personally, I think it is criminal that the move earth power can't be passed on. There are so many special move users that would become incredible with access to that move. Of course that's in my opinion... So please don't hold back the comments....

Dragon Quest Monsters digs at Pokemon

Sounds like Square Enix's Dragon Quest Monsters: Joker is looking to knock Pokemon down a notch a or two. The new trailer ends with the tagline "Losers catch 'em all, Winners catch the best!"

I'd be more mad if the game didn't look so neat.

Wifi Codes

Hey Everyone,
I just wanted to let you know that I added friend codes for all of the wifi games I own on my profile. At some point we'll have to get together to battle, but if that's not possible I'll just wait for the first Wednesday of November or whatever day was chosen for that.

Early Pokemon Ranch Pics

Serebii posted some early pics of the upcoming Wii Ware game.

P.S. Finally figured out which RSS Feed I wanted to use. Bulbanews (from Bulbapedia) is now up. Let me know if anyone has any other RSS feeds they like.

Insane IV Inquiry....I

So...and what was probably a first for me, I tried breeding multiples of one Pokemon and checking the IVs for a true champ. However, I noticed that about 70% of my offspring (15 or so) had the exact same IVs. Does the parents have anything to do with the generation of these values?

Rules and Such

What types of rules would we like to establish for battling? I figure there are some basic rules we can agree on (i.e. no hacked Pokemon, no repeated Pokemon, no repeated items, etc.) but what else should we include? Also, would anyone be interested in drafting a formal list once we finalize the rules?

Gym Leaders

So which gyms would people officially like to lead? I think Chris is doing Dragon and Matt is doing Normal, but other than that I have no idea what everyone else is doing. Also have there been particular rules established as to what can and can't be done? (i.e. The Bug guy in the Sinnoh E4 has a Drapion which is Dark/Poison but evolves from a Bug type. Would something like be acceptable?)

Pokemon Team Process

Well, I've just finished EV training my second Pokemon and thought that it would be cool to discuss and see how far along everyone's teams have come.

Also, I'd like to sneak in the question of:
Has anyone checked out that GameFAQs FAQ on TM acquisition? I saw them mention that Explosion is a one-time only TM but I THOUGHT you could acquire it via Emerald's Battle Frontier, as a pickup item, or some other way. Thoughts?

Use Comments

On the topic of keeping the blog from becoming a mess, I'd like to advocate the use of comments, thus keeping each post as its own thread as opposed to making a new post to reply to old posts. This will also let us link to certain post as well as all related feedback all at once. Just my 2 cents...

DS Night Starting November

So just one more reminder that DS Night will begin monthly starting on Wednesday (first date TBA) in November at the Sidebar Taven (www.sidebartavern.com) hosted by Entertainment System (www.myspace.com/entertainmentsystem). See you in the funny pages!
